/ˈrɪvəzli/ (say 'rivuhzlee)

an area in the southern part of Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park in north-western Qld, noted for proliferation of mammal fossils; with Naracoorte Caves National Park in SA forms the Australian Fossil Mammal Sites inscribed in the World Heritage List in 1994. About 10 000 ha.
The extensive fossil deposits at the Riversleigh fossil site record at least 20 million years of mammal evolution, providing the first records for many distinctive groups of both living and extinct mammals, as well as evidence of links between Australian mammals and mammals outside Australia. The site also holds a record of environmental change over time from rainforest to semi-arid grassland. Prehistoric animals preserved here include marsupial lions, carnivorous kangaroos, diprotodons and a 15 million-year-old monotreme; placental mammals are represented by more than 35 bat species, the richest-known fossil bat record in the world. The Riversleigh site and the Naracoorte Caves are grouped together as the Australian Fossil Mammal Sites. Each is highly significant in its own right. They were added to the World Heritage List in recognition of the extreme diversity and quality of their fossils and the links through time they provide to living animals and plants, and the evidence each provides separately of key stages in the evolution of the continent's unique and distinctive mammals.
